The original name of this painting was L’Absinthe, but has been translated as both Absinthe Drinker and also Glass of Absinthe. Absinth identified as Andree’s drink by its colour and the presence of a carafe of water was the most popular of spirits in France at this time. However, the painting had such a realistic air about it that it cast agsynth slur on the reputations of both Marcellin Desboutin and Ellen Andree.

Over the next 35 years, L’Absinthe would pass from one art collector to another until Count Isaac de Camondo bequeathed it to the Louvre in Marcellin Desboutinthe engraver, also used to go there.
